Lets talk about your brain. It's awesome, it's squishy, and it looks something like this:
Of course different parts of your brain do different things, and they are separated into "Hemispheres". Instead of an explanation, lets just skip to a picture of what each hemisphere does!

While the right side controls things like:
Now lets talk about TV.
TV is a pretty awesome invention, but recently it has become far less about learning and far more about manipulation and subversion, even if the powers that be aren't aware they're doing it, it happens regardless.
How you ask? Herbert Krugman, conducted some experiments that revealed some interesting facts on just what happens to your brain while you're soaking up an I Love Lucy marathon.
While you're watching TV your brain activity switches and spikes on the right side. "Of course," you say, "The right side of the brain deals in Visual Imagery, Music, and Face Recognition." Exactly! However,
The right side of the brain treats incoming data uncritically, processing information in wholes, leading to emotional, rather than logical, responses. To cherry on the cake is during the switch your body releases endorphins which make you feel good. The result being that it is possible, and quite likely, that you have become physically addicted to TV. A hypothesis that has come from numerous studies where people have been unable to "quit" TV, much like alcohol or drugs. Such as this one, this one, this one, oh and this one from 2011 that states some of the effects of watching 6 hours or more of TV a day can lead to a 5 years shorter lifespan than those people who did not watch TV. Among other things of course.
Here's a great TED talk by Lauren Zalaznick. The link will take you to her TED Speaker page, so you can read her credentials. Her TED talk on "The Conscience of Television" can be found through a clickable picture in the upper right.
